Following the devastating Midwest Floods of 1993, many communities adopted mitigation efforts to protect themselves from repetitive losses. In Spring of 2008, floods threatened many of the same communities, however, the loss of life and property was minimized following local, state, and federal mitigation efforts there. This video features Paul Osman, Floodplan Programs Manager for the State of Illinois during an interview in Otterville, IL in June, 2008 .

Spring, 2007 -- A series of strong storms brought heavy rains and flooding across the Midwest. Many communities were threatened when the rivers swelled and the levees were topped. The President ordered federal aid to help state and local emergency managers respond to potential floods. Rural communities in Arkansas relied on state and federal partners to deliver drinking water and other immediate needs. This video features a glimpse into disaster response activities in the Arkansas Division of Emergency Management (ADEM) in Little Rock, Arkansas, and interviews with Charmaine Mitzlaff, Director of Emergency Management for Searcy County, Aaron Adams, ADEM Event Manager, and Pam Kottke, Searcy County Resident.

When a state requests Direct Federal Assistance following a presidential declaration, FEMA may provide requested commodities, generators or personnel to help save lives and protect property.

The small Kansas town of Greensburg was devastated by an EF-5 tornado on May 4, 2007. The President ordered federal aid to help the community respond to and recover from the effects of the disaster. FEMA delivered immediate assistance and committed resources to provide temporary housing and long-term planning so that the community could stay near their school and their jobs as the rebuilt. The Regional Response Coordination Center in Atlanta manages disasters in the eight states covered by Region IV: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. The RRCC serves as a unified center for federal agencies to deploy assets and work together with local and state emergency managers until a field office can be established at or near the scene of the disaster.
