ISCRAM2010
Defining Crisis Management 3.0
7th International Conference on Information Systems for Crisis Response and Management
May 2-5, 2010
Crowne Plaza Hotel
Seattle Washington USA

ISCRAM2010 Dedicated Website now open!

Dear ISCRAM 2010 Community,

The public site for ISCRAM 2010 is now open at http://www.iscram.org/iscram2010

From this site you can track evolving information on the conference, register (through a link to conftool), and reserve your room at the conference hotel, the Crowne Plaza in downtown Seattle. All official conference activities will take place at the Crowne Plaza, and we have secured excellent rates for the location and quality. Rooms are limited, so consider booking as soon as possible. Early conference registration will be in effect through February 15th, 2010.

The program committee is busy putting together what will certainly be an exciting and impactful set of research papers, practitioner reports, works in progress and demonstrations. It will be a major event, both intellectual and social, that you won't want to miss. (Speaking of social, be sure to sign up for the banquet too.) We look forward to seeing all of you in Seattle in May 2 - 5.

Best Regards,
The 2010 ISCRAM Conference Committee

ISCRAM2010: 7th International Conference on Information Systems for Crisis Response and Management

DEFINING CRISIS MANAGEMENT 3.0

May 2-5 2010
Crown Plaza Hotel
Seattle, Washington USA

We recognise that the dreadful earthquake in Haiti requires the attention of many ISCRAM participants who would be submitting papers by the final deadline of Monday 18th January. In consequence we are extending the deadline for submission of work-in-progress papers, discussion papers and practitioner reports by a week until January 25th.

We also recognise that even this may be too tight for some people deployed to deal with the Haitian crisis. If you really are unable to meet the new deadline because of this, please email iscram2010@iscram.org explaining the situation and we will do our utmost to allow an even later submission.

Details of the conference are available at www.iscram.org/iscram2010

Haiti Earthquake - ISCRAM Live
Written by Bartel Van de Walle
Saturday, 16 January 2010

Many people have been wondering what ISCRAM is doing regarding the horrific situation in Haiti. The answer is that we are working out what we can do.

We are not a direct response organization. Our primary role is to change the future of crisis management rather than the present. We hope that the enormous efforts the ISCRAM community has devoted toward this end over the past seven years are now bearing fruit and are helping to save lives and relieve suffering.

However, we are not immune to wanting to have a more tangible and direct effect where possible, and, as a very young organization, are grappling with the question of what we might do to support the immediate situation in Haiti as well as the broader question of what our role can and should be with respect in catastrophic events. Our community offers formidable resources:brains, knowledge and extensive professional networks. But it is not obvious how these are mobilized in a meaningful and systematic way.

We will be opening a conversation on this broader question within the community, and will take it up at the upcoming conference in May. In the meantime, we welcome ideas and suggestions on how we might contribute to the present situation (bearing in mind that a complaint or suggestion is an act of volunteering; we have no spare 'they's lying about, you is both 'we' and 'they').

In the meantime, we recognize that one of our responsibilities as an organization is to enable our community members to contribute to the response, so will be extending the Short Paper and Practitioner Report deadline for ISCRAM2010. Please look for an announcement from Simon French, the Program Chair, for further details.

We have also established a page on ISCRAM Live so that you may follow and report on ISCRAM-related Haiti activities: ISCRAM Live Haiti, please use the tag #iscramhaiti in your tweets, blogs, flickr uploads, etc.

We also encourage everyone make use of the extensive ISCRAM network through our Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter feeds.

With our sincere gratitude and thankful recognition to those of our community members who are actively engaged in response efforts, those who are supporting the response in indirect ways, and those whose past efforts are now bearing fruit.

ISCRAM

BEST WISHES AND A PERSONAL INVITATION TO BECOME AN ISCRAM MEMBER IN 2010

ISCRAM has been on quite an extraordinary journey since May 2004, when a group of researchers active in the then newly termed "ISCRAM" domain gathered for the first time in Brussels. We have since organized conferences annually in 7 other cities in Europe, the USA and China, attracting an increasingly diverse crowd of researchers and practitioners with a variety of interests, experiences and expertise.

The ISCRAM Community has continued to grow and mature over these past five years, to finally become a formal international non-profit organization at the 2009 Gothenburg Conference.

Quite probably, you have been an active part of this journey. Perhaps you attended a previous summer school in Tilburg, or you submitted and presented your work at one of our conferences in Brussels, Delft, Gothenburg, Newark, Washington or Harbin, or you contributed to the special editions of journals or books that have followed from these events. If that was the case, we thank you for that - without the contribution and commitment from you and many others, there would quite simply not be an ISCRAM community. If you were not involved with ISCRAM before, we do hope you will be soon and we will be glad to welcome you at one of our forthcoming activities.

Whether you are an 'old' ISCRAM friend or you just got to know us, I do write you this letter to ask you to join us in this new and crucial phase of the ISCRAM community, and become a regular member of the newly established ISCRAM Association. Below you will find more information on what this membership can offer you: reduced registration fees for the conference, summer school or IJISCRAM journal but above all the knowledge of becoming part of this vibrant and welcoming global community.

I am therefore looking forward to welcoming you as a 2010-member of the ISCRAM Association, and I hope to be able to meeting you soon.

Warm regards, Bartel Van de Walle - Chairman of the ISCRAM Association Board

ISCRAM2010
Defining Crisis Management 3.0
7th International Conference on Information Systems for Crisis Response and Management

DECEMBER 2009 UPDATE

Submission of work-in-progress, discussions, and practitioner papers remain open until January 18th 2010, but submission of full research papers is now closed.

ISCRAM is aware that it serves a wide community of different disciplines spanning both academic and practitioner interests so our conferences accept a wide range of types of submission. When submission of full research papers closed at the end of November, over 80 papers had been submitted and these are now going through full double-blind, academic peer review. ISCRAM conferences are much more than presentations of research results. They are full of vibrant discussion and networking opportunities.

We are still seeking three types of submission to stimulate discussion, focus on practitioner needs and priorities and explore research still in progress:

ISCRAM2010 is still soliciting three types of submission:

1. Work in progress and discussion papers.
2. Practitioner reports and discussions which raise issues, examples and case studies, examples of best practices, improvements, and significant insights or examples.
3. Demonstrations.

We welcome any such submissions in any of our tracks and sessions.

The full call for papers is available here .

Specific calls for our tracks and sessions are available:

In addition there will be a special track organised by the University of Washington Conference on Safety and Security Education & Research (SASER):

  • Safety and Security Education (SASER). The objectives of SASER are to create a community dialogue to explore research and education priorities for (regional) safety and security. Submissions relating to this objective sought. A specific call for this track is available here

There will also be a number of special sessions, including
